Wormbelly's Slithering Sideshow with Eden.
#1, I'm a music FAN, first. In knowing this, it'll make everything else easier to understand. Simply enough, I *don't* work to inflate anyone's ego, but every once in a while, an artist happens to snag me with songs and music that dive deep and swirl... at that time, I'm eager to share them with the world. Wormbelly finally came to ATL. I was there.
Eden
After wading through the two opening bands (there were moments of interest, but moments fade) ... Eden took the stage.
The night before the show, I visited Eden's site. Listened to several tracks to get an idea of their groove. Some bands are simply easier to embrace in the "live" element. Eden is one of those bands. Delicately brash, they rocked through dark tales of song.

With a cool blue groove and solid performance, I found myself appreciating Eden much more than anticipated. Greatly surprised, I'd urge anyone who enjoys progressive blues and true americana rock to catch them "live" and check out their unplugged material. Both presence and guitarwork were top-notch. Good stand-alone show, guys.
Wormbelly
Warmly welcomed by Chris, he introduced me to the band... there's a bunch of them. hehe Since first listening to their CD: "TheGuf" back in August, I was interested to see how they'd pull off the epicly noir, yet sweet powergroove tracks I'd come to enjoy on the densly sonic CD. As they weaved in and out of familiar and not as familiar tunes, it quickly became appearent that the Wormbelly live show energy was a different experience altogether.

Back to the Worm...
Rhythmically, this small army maintained the same "smoothness" the CD engaged so fiercely. A slick cadence that I've shared to others that enjoy the likes of the Posies and Jellyfish. Alternatively, Chris' vox and guitar unified and surged melody with a rage at times that gave a Pumpkin-esque thrill. Chris and Kevin ripping along each other proved certainly this live show embodied more tidalwave than wading pool. Big show...
Surprises... BOOM. KC's(?) drumwork rooted deep. For those that enjoy fricken HUGE, yet intricate drums... take a listen to the CD. I'd assume, as a percussionist, it's a joy to play. I'm not really a drum-junkie so, I pick up on the extraordinary... in the Southeast both Wormbelly and local favorites, TheGoodies stand-out with and obviousness too appearent to forgive. hehe (BTW, Patrick and Holiday from TheGoodies were in attendence.) With syncopated and slipping rhythms Todd maintained that solid bassline groove that *is* the warmth of Wormbelly.
Visual... GoGo, visual-performer/pianist lent a radical stageshow to the bittersweet melodies. Contortionist and mobile human light-source, Thought to self... we need more visual stimulation for our music... especially on the local and regional level. The "live" experience allows us all to do this... why don't we see more involving this stimulating element? hmmm
Wrap it up...
As I mentioned before, the LIVE Wormbelly experience is different than the CD experience. The CD is a delightful sonic voyage. The LIVE show is an exploding ball of visual stimulation and phonic crunch. I'd like to experience those harmonies stronger. *jab* :-D Thanks for the plugs for RSP! Chris gave me the shirt off his back. No really. Replaced it with a CJ T... enjoy bro. I'll be seeing this band again. Next time... after-party at my place. :)
peace-
