MORE THAN TRAGIC... RHODE ISLAND
Can't describe how my stomach dropped when I first saw the amatuer video footage. So many people. Reported... hundreds of trusting music fans and club patrons tragically caught amidst a shoddily-run *entertainment network* of clubs, managers, agents, technicians, and entertainers. A network that now has many lessons to learn about the simple respect for the patronage.

As the country can't fathom the extent of this atrocity and the bitter loss to the mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, friends, neighbors, and co-workers.
The impact of this event should be felt deep and hard. This "entertainment network" must own up and seriously examine the holes in their responsibilities before the world loses more music fans.

THE FANS.
This hits me the hardest. These are real people. People with jobs, families, aspirations and responsibilities. Now, so many holes appear in the fabric of the community... intregal pieces of our world. Even at my distance from this community, I hope for everyone to know the name and story of every victim of last week's horrible fire at The Station in Rhode Island. This wasn't a random group of people.

These were specific people that took time from their busy lives to take a break on a Thursday night, entrust their safety to the "professionals" of this "entertainment network" of clubs, managers, agents, technicians, and entertainers. This trust between patron and industry was broken. Collectively, let's do what we can to get to know each and every one of their names, their stories, and their aspirations cut short by an accident that could have been easily avoided.

RESPONSIBILITY TO CHANGE.
I'm not a legal guy, I don't really know who'll get the eventual blame for this avoidable incident I *am*, however, interested in what the live music industry does to stop passing the buck. Stop the blame game. Take some responsibility for your livelihood... the respect of fans everywhere.

RESPECT FOR TECHNOLOGY.
No band, no club, no agent wishes for such horrible events to happen. Now is the time to begin to act like a consumer-centric industry and implement some respect for the careful limits of entertainment technology...
  • Architecture. Every venue has certain limits. Make those written and clear.
  • Safety. In case of an emergency... prominent safety lighting on floor and exits. Borrow some ideas from the airline industry.
  • Industry Technicians. You can't run an amplified music show without a SoundTech or Engineer. I hope we'll see knowledgable certifications for dealing with entertainment technology. A pyrotechnics or certified technician would know the limits to their craft and environment. (My kitchen ceiling is 5 ft higher than the one at The Station, and I certainly wouldn't ever consider such examples.)

As a true fans of "big rock show" effects, I hope this isn't an end-all to indoor pyrotechnics. If only for the victims of this tragedy, it's time to work together, be aware of our technology and limits of our environment... and keep the "rock show" alive with the safety and respect for music fans everywhere.

    AMERICAN IDOL: WEEK 3
How odd are the contestants this year. The best vocalists are the social oddities, and this group will make the Top10 of last season look like a gaggle(?) of fashion show models.

The awesome vox of Frenchie's out of the running due to her days in web "modeling". Left in her displacement this week... a group of oddly familiar personalities 'direct from central casting', as AK would say.

  • "That Guy" was pretty good, but only a little better than you'd expect. Does some gymnastics, AND I *bet* he juggles and even yoyo's frighteningly better than all others.
  • "ChickThatSangABoringShowtune"... great voice, too bad your song choice sucked my ass.
  • "PunkyFullFiguredMexicanGirl"... I'll know your name tomorrow, and I expect you'll be back, if only because the others lacked your personality. Weird tho... seems like her personality is 10x better than her voice... and the voice doesn't match the image... hmmmm
  • "NotMichaelBolton", "IndianGirlWithBoobsAndStonedBrother" and "RandomHawaiianGuy"... I bet people in your bowling alley love it when you sing Karaoke.
  • "RighteousBrother"... another odd voice... not even sure what to say about it.
  • "HerculesAKASpecialK"... cool vocal ending to his song... I'm afraid the guy simply isn't that bright, but based upon talent alone, should move on to the next round.
  • Did I get them all?

    America's Idol Image thus far...
  • Mid-20s hair stylist?
  • Skinny guy in big brother's clothes?
  • Big Alabama Boy?
  • Pre-Law Booty Diva?
    and this week?
  • Possibly "SpecialK"?
  • Possibly "PunkyFullFiguredMexicanGirl"?

One thing's for sure, our Top 10 will appear like a better representation of the average American this season. Brought to you by... Kool-Aid addictions, deep-fried chicken McNuggets, Funions and Otter-Pops.

    ECONOMIC COMPLACENCY.
So, a few weeks ago, I decided to email my Governor, Perdue, to find out what he's doing to bolster economic growth in my state. Four weeks later, still no answer from him.

I'm not an activitst or radical who contacts government agencies for personal gain. I just wanted a reply, a personal note and written *nod* that the virtually unemployed in Georgia have a name, a face, a story. I still await his response, and truly hope it's not a form letter, because that would simply anger me.

    TAX RELIEF vs. CREATIVE MARKETS.
I'm no economist or political scientist so bare with my rogue thoughts... I don't need a tax break. We don't pay taxes on ZERO income. I need a friggen job or at least a continued source of projects from a stimulated market.

    NEXT STIMULUS.
Our country isn't excited about anything. Collectively, we're in a defensive mode, and if there's any industry that has benefitted, it's cable TV and Internet destinations. People are staying home and entertaining themselves with these avenues.

I don't know the actual numbers, I *do* know in my universe of people, we're watching much more television than just a few years ago. We're all escaping from a sh*tty economic climate. Sell me something I absolutely need or hire me to help push that product or service to market.

The Internet market is becoming rich with popular web destinations, yet today, it appears only computer companies and porn are benefitting properly from this influx of "escapists". BMW has it right. Their TV/Internet campaigns were so creatively intriguing, they won awards at the Cannes Film Festival!!! ADvertainment is an amazing outlet for pushing product in a exciting and palettable way.

    ADvertainment.
*raises hand* I'd love the opportunity to work with this redefining force on a smaller market scale. The SouthEast, Atlanta... let's create an addictive marketing media phenomena. It will push product, entertain, create mindshare in the populus, and help me pay rent next month.

    AMERICAN IDOL: WEEK 2

    *************
    added: I was right. *bows*
    *************

Unaffected. I was certain we'd hear better and more broad vocals and vocal-style this second season. By now, it's relatively obvious that if you have some talent... get some free publicity for your career... at LEAST try-out! The contents of this second gaggle of finalists was "ok" at best.

As last week, only a few of finalists only a few hot items from my recount of this show... fewer contestants will be remembered.

  • Hadas... cool name. Should have shown more boob. Move on.
  • Kimberly... 2nd best voice of the night. Congrats, but let some ELSE dress you.
  • Big405... best voice of the night... great voice.
  • SkinnySoutherGuy or HowdyDoodyWithOddVoiceWithPerfectPitch could be developed into something with the right material... just odd.
  • Lil' LindaBlair, she's a cutie, cool voice, absolutely the wrong song. Come back in ONE YEAR.
  • mmm... oh yea... that "GuyThatLooksLikeJustinFromLastSeason" performed badly.
  • and some other people performed, I think.

    IDOL VOTING.
I have yet to play into the whole voting by phone thing , prolly never will. How user-unfriendly is the whole ATT wireless text message thing? The instructions are even more difficult than finding the *outstanding* talent in this bunch.

Let's hope Week 3 exists to impress us.

  • Introducing... seanroxMUSIC.com !!!

Finally got enuff stuff together to launch a mini-site centered on my music. "How many sites do you have now, Sean?" you may ask. Worry not... the blog will always be the center of my universe no matter the topic.

Anyhoo... it's launched and I'll be adding stuff to it as I get more. Currently it's 3 vocal demos in streaming mp3 format, some "rockstar" pictures and your basic "verbal shrine" of a biography that my good friend, PRBob, wrote for me. Actually makes me sound interesting... the fool...

Check it out if you wish at this easy-to-remember URL: seanroxMUSIC.com.

Can you build a RockStar in 48hours?

Guess we'll see. Got the basic template design for an EPK (ElectronicPressKit). About to head to VMG Studio with producer & guitarGOD, Jesse Deese, to record 2-3 songs hopefully... one of which is a true "groove rocker." hehe

Finally... off my ass doing something about this music cloggin' up my brain.

    CULTURE AFFECT.
In this life and culture we live... how will you alter or add to it. Even in the smallest of ways? Will you introduce a phrase that everyone begins to use frequently? Will you create a fashion trend out your own personal essence?

How have *you* contributed to or influenced pop-culture, even in the smallest circle around your own life that others have adopted? You may not have been the first in the world to think about "it"... just the one to popularize "it" in your social circle, even in the smallest of ways...

Adam has a un-natural knack at succesffuly influencing lexicon and keeping the "cheesy the 80s movies" spirit alive, and revels in it... ha!

Naphleon's fashion adoption catches the eyes of people... thinking slightly outside the norm, existing in the norm with a flare... also, took her about a month of pushing... she made a BlackCrowes fan out of me(1990).... thank you for that.

MsCinny also has a natural influence on oddly-implemented sarcastic speech and language inflections that'll have you rollin'.

I, however, feel as though I introduce smaller, more clandestine pop-culture rituals...
  • Canvas ChuckTaylors(1984/5)... really quite comfortable, but generic sneakers were constructed the same... got made fun of by the same peeps that ended up buying them a couple years later... I didn't create the retro-trend, but ahead of the curve.
  • Flanel PJ bottoms(1995)... used to be hard to find... had to buy the whole set, then all of sudden easy -- everywhere! Ahead of the curve on that one.
  • That70sShow(1998?)... hardcore fan since day one. Quite possibly one of the most well-constructed/written sitcom in recent years. It's religion.
  • ConcreteBlonde(1988)... the most under-rated band of the 1980s. Yes, I'm a fanatic.
  • TheGoodies(2000)... great band from the Southeast... simply too good for a record deal.
  • TenaciousD(2000/2001)... best CD of 2001
  • Maroon5(2002)... yea, I found out about this band from Salon.com, but a contribution in my lil circle of influence.
  • ElectricBlankies(2002)... admittedly, out of need... no gas when it gets cold is bad, but others have followed suit. hehe
  • The use of multiple monitors (2000)... yea, I dreamed about it since I saw a non-linear video-editting system in 1993. The usability is unbelievable.
  • ... and of course, my love for SouthernRock... if I have my way it'll never die.

Ask yourself... what have you affected your own circle of influence? hmmm

AMERCIAN IDLE (yea, I went for the easy one.)
First show of the top 32 idolettes. At this point, the vocal talent is slightly better than the first season, but there's really no reason to remember most these people's names until the top 10.

So... which two America choose this week to advance to the top 10?
  • Miami "Dancey-Boy" was out of breath and tune, and for the first time in my life, I'd someone to PLEASE get a haircut.
  • Denim-Cap boy's vocals were smooth, but looked like he stole his big brother's clothes for the event.
  • I agree with Simon that "BigGuy with Spotted Tie" dressed his father better than himself... and his voice simply doesn't have the personality to outweigh his own mass. (cheap shot alert)
  • From the ThinBlackGirl Department.. "her" voice bettered last season's TamyraGray... and this girl is even nicer to look at.
  • "Girl in Hat"... lose the hat and open your mouth.
  • JD Adams... he gets a name... cuz it didn't suck or sound like a name assembled while under the influence. Good voice. Easy to look at, but only two get thru.

I echo my own favorites as the again, virtually nameless "dualing bitches", as naphleon shares? ak agrees. I will, however, throw in "Tamyra's Revenge" as a swing vote.

And... to FOX, nice cross-marketing move bringing Joe Millionaire to the show.

    ***UPDATE*************************************
Julia, brunette hairdresser of the "dueling-bitches" and nameless "DenimCap-Boy" were selected by America... the swing vote went to him instead of who I thought would be there.... but in the end, Kimberly, the other "bitch" singlehandedly won the show with her out-bound performance. We'll remember her for later, possibly.

    BLENDERS AND BEER
Caught this commercial tonight... appears havoc ensues when a young man and woman at curbside, near one of their apartments... the pet goldish go flying. In an entirely too cute manner they manage to save the fish upstairs by placing them in water within the nearest receptacle on the counter... a blender.

They celebrate by drinking beer. All the while laughing.... fade to white. END.

    Allow me complete this scenario...
The two, happy with beer forget about the fish, and it gets hot and heavy into the night. At some point the guy offers to get some more of that "happy-happy love beer" from the kitchen. In his own bliss, he trips on the rug from the dining area into the kitchen and lunges forward. In attempts to break his fall, stretches his arms out to catch the counter. He overshoots, and the butt of his hand slams into the 4 button control panel of the blender. *END*

Now, that's a commercial I can happy-happy laugh and drink to.

"100%" Vocal DEMO that sucks less!
Just got in from VMGstudio where producer/guitarist and creative audioman, Jesse Deese, closed up shop and finished this little demo in record time. Further Kudos to Adam who acted as 2nd engineer for the mini-project.

    DOWNLOAD THE MP3 for "100%"

The song is a rootsy, yet technology-advanced ballad gone anthem bluesy ummm... song?
